We will now be discovering the geography of Turkey. We will go over what Turkey looks like physically, the different plants and animals that live there, as well as the people of Turkey.

Capital- Ankara
Total area- 780,580 sq km(slightly larger than the state of Texas)
7,200 km of coastline
The Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and Aegean Sea surround Turkey
One of the famous mountains is Mount Nemrut located in Southeastern Turkey. Here are a large number of statues which are assumed to be part of a royal tomb. (www.turkey-mountains.com)
Turkey's climate in the summer is very hot and dry. Its average temperature in the summer is about 86ºF. In the winter it is snowy and cold. The average temperature is around 25ºF. This weather is kind of similar to the weather we are used to here in Illinois. In Northern Turkey especially there are a lot of severe earthquakes. The country though is one of the most earth-quake prone places in the entire world!
Turkey is located in the Southwest part of Asia. Because of its location, any part West of the Bosporus is geographically part of Europe.(http://www.atozkidsstuff.com/turkey.html)
Plants and Animals of Turkey
Plants:
Chickpeas- The plant grows between 8-20 inches high and has small featherly leaves on each side of the stem. The plant has seedpods that contain 2-3 seeds, which are the chickpeas. (www.wikipedia.com)
Fig Fruit
FIgs- A type of tropical tree that is known for its fruit. The pollination system is speciaffically done by the fig wasp.(www.wikipedia.com)
Hazelnuts
Hazelnut- The hazelnut comes in a shell that is called the cob. Hazelnuts are grown on trees and during harvesting season and the tree will drop both its leaves and thenuts on to the floor. Turkey is the la

Common flowers in Turkey are Snowdrops, Cyclamens, Tulips,and Roses. (allaboutturkey.com)
Tulips
Animals:
Monk Seal- There are only about 600 left in the world as one of the most endangered mammals and about 100 or so live in Turkey. They grow up to be about 8 feet long and 530-880 pounds. They eat a variety of fish along with octopus, eel, and squids. (www.wikipedia.com)
Turkish Van Cat
Turkish Van Cat- This cat needs to catch fish in order to eat, and love the water. This is a white house cat, with coloring only on the head and tail. These cats are extremely smart.(http://www.atozkidsstuff.com/turkey.html)
Kegal Sheepdog
Kangal Sheepdog- This dog is used to heard packs of sheep and keep away predators. It is a large and powerful dog. These dogs are extremely loyal and affectionate towards their owners and loved ones.(http://www.atozkidsstuff.com/turkey.html)
Bald Ibis
Bald Ibis- This bird is only found in Turkey and is becoming extinct. These birds feed off of grasshoppers, snakes, and lizards. They like to make their nests in rock cracks and takes about 27 to 28 days for an egg to hatch. (http://www.atozkidsstuff.com/turkey.html)
Denizil Rooster
Denizil Rooster- This bird was brought up in the town of Denizil, and is where its name comes from. This crow is special because of the length of its grow, which on average lasts anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds. This bird comes in 5 different colors and has both long legs and neck. The city of Istanbul
Turkey's population is 73.7 million people with an increase of about 1.5% each year. With about 71% of the population living in an urban setting. The capital of Ankara has a population of 4,223,398 people. The city with the highest population is Istanbul with 12,946,730 people.(www.wikipedia.com)
Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Turkey is run with a type of democracy called parliamentary representative democracy. Their president is elected with five year terms and holds more of a ceremonial role. In Turkey though the Prime Minister holds the sole authority along with the Council of Ministers. This would be more like the role that our president holds in the United States.(www.wikipedia.com)
People in Ankara
In Turkey 76% are Turks, 15.7% Kurds and 8.3% are of another ethnicity. The main language spoken in Turkey is Turkish which is spoken by 75% of the population. The other languages spoken there are American, Arabic, Kurdish, and Greek. (www.wikipedia.com)
